Please note, that I usually use an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil to create all my illustrations. I use the Procreate app and I find it super easy to use. You can see this course if you want to learn how to use Procreate.

But you can use any tool – pencils and paper or Copic markers or Photoshop because the drawing method remains the same.

Let’s dive in!

How to draw a simple Lipstick – Easy Step by step Tutorial

We will break it down into simple shapes so you can draw the lipstick easily.

Let’s start with the box container of the lipstick.

I’m going to draw 2 V shapes one on the top and the other at the bottom.

The bottom is smaller than the top but the corners align with each other like so:

Now, let’s draw the lipstick container box. I’m just going to draw 3 vertical lines from the V shapes we just drew.

Easy, isn’t it?

Please note that I am drawing this lipstick in a cartoon style.

Next, I’m going to draw the rim of the box.

Now, I’ll draw the metallic region of the lipstick that holds the lipstick crayon.

It almost looks like a dustbin, but it’s best to break down complex shapes into easier ones to make drawing easy!

Now, I’ll start drawing the lipstick crayon. I’m going to draw 2 lines going up vertically from the lipstick container.

And now, complete drawing the lipstick crayon by joining the two lines in a curved V shape.

We’re nearly done with the outline of the lipstick.

Just draw a small semi-circle on the top to show the carved surface of the lipstick crayon.

And voila! We’ve finished learning how to draw a lipstick.

Now, it’s time to color the lipstick.

Let’s start with the lipstick container. I’m going to color it purple.

You can choose any color you want.

Now, I’m going to color the metallic portion a light grey.

And finally, I will color the lipstick crayon a medium rose pink.

Remember, you can go with any color – red, pink, orange. Let your creativity run wild.

Now, we can leave it here, but if you’re making this drawing digitally, you can add a little light and shadows to avoid your drawing from looking flat.

Remember to note in which direction you want the light hitting your object – in this case, the lipstick.

I’m going to color one side of the lipstick with a medium purple – to indicate the shadows because the shadows are always on the other side of the object that is hit by the light.

Then I will change the blending mode of the shadow layer to Multiply and decrease the opacity to 33% so I get this effect.

If the shadows are too harsh, you can always use the smudge tool to blend the shadows and make them more subtle.

Next, I’ll draw the light on one side of the lipstick.

I’m going to create a new layer and draw the light with a bright, light blue to accentuate the lighter parts of the lipstick.

I will then change the blending mode to “Add” and decrease the opacity to 17% and the highlights are done!

And we’ve just learned how to draw a lipstick from scratch!
